Every makeup look has several crucial parts: the face, the eyes, the brows and, of course, the lips. No look has ever been completed without a suitable lip color, even if that means nothing but a sheer gloss. But there is more to lips than just the shade we color them in: it’s what’s behind them. And if you’re noticing that your teeth look yellow or orange, it might be because of the shade of lipstick you’re using. So how do you find the correct one?
Look at the undertone
Everybody knows that each color has thousands of different shades and variations, and the majority of it comes from the color’s undertone. A pink with a blue undertone is a lot different than one with a warm undertone. And when looking at the color wheel, blue and orange are on the opposite sides, meaning they will give the illusion of canceling each other out. So if you want your teeth to appear whiter: go cold. However, make sure you don’t go too icy, because if you make your lips look too light or simply too glossy, you risk making your teeth look yellow in comparison. And if you are unsure what you can go for, a berry color will always look good, and there are thousands of shades for you to pick from.
Let’s break this down color by color: The classic red lip is something that every woman has worn at least once in her life, and it has a special place in makeup enthusiasts’ hearts. But if your goal is to make your teeth appear whiter, then you should lean away from the oranges, coral reds and even the true reds, and head more towards the berry reds, burgundies and other cool tones. Similar logic can be applied to pink lipsticks, where cold pinks and ones leaning towards purple will be your best bet. When talking about nudes, there are a couple of things you have to consider, the first being your skin tone. If you have darker skin, you can get away with applying just a simple lip balm or gloss and be good to go, because the contrast of your skin and your teeth will give your smile all the whiteness it needs. But, if you are fair-skinned, you might want to find a nude that is a couple of shades darker than your natural lips, and leans towards a deep pink or brown.
Take care of your teeth
No matter how many lipsticks you try, the best way to get your teeth to appear white – is for them to be white. Not only are stained teeth a potential signal of health problems, but they are not the most flattering detail. I make sure to brush my teeth three times per day with a whitening and protective toothpaste and visit my dentist in Baulkham Hills every few months, to see if everything is in order. If cavities are left untreated, they can cause tooth decay and other health problems. If my teeth get a bit stained over time from my love of coffee, I go for a light brightening treatment that doesn’t damage my teeth.
Now you know which lipsticks from your drawer to use when you want to wow with a pearly white smile. Just don’t forget to periodically take out a hand mirror and check for any lipstick stains on your teeth, or prevent it altogether by blotting your lipstick and setting it with a spray or powder before you leave. Remember that the color is only one part of the equation and that the most important thing is to always have a wide smile!
