Hi Jae, How are you?
Hello, I’m doing very well! In the middle of a busy day at the salon, I work at Sally Hershberger Tim Rogers salon in Manhattan, New York. But glad I have a second in between some clients to take a moment and talk to you guys.
We love your work, thanks for taking the time to chat to us?
Thank you so much, my schedule has been a little hectic lately so I apologize for taking so long, I try and schedule as many things as I can and sometimes I think I tend to over do it a bit. But I like to stay busy!!
How did you get into hairdressing?
As a young boy I always enjoyed the process of watching the women around me get ready. I have a lots of aunts and older cousins, So I was always mesmerized by the way they did their make up and hair and how they would be transformed, It was very inspiring for me to watch them.
I quickly became addicted and always wanted to style my sisters hair, unfortunately for me all of them are tomboys and hated when I wanted to style their hair. But I quickly found friends and neighbours that would let me play with their hair. I remember when I was in elementary school and one of my neighbours was graduating from 8th grade and I did her hair. I went to her graduation and everyone kept commenting on how amazing her hair looked. I remember the look of shock in people faces when they found out it was me. I remember after all the praise I received and the way I made my friend feel. I knew it was exactly what I always wanted to do. Before you know it I was styling everyone’s hair. I even set up a haircuting chair in the summer in my garage and I would do men’s cuts.
What are you hair style prediction’s for 2018?
I don’t know if I can predict it! But I know what I would love to see would be a lot more daring hair choices, I feel like we have become very safe with hair recently. It’s all about a “beach wave” which is great but I think hair should be celebrated and I feel like women and men should explore it a lot more. I think maybe going shorter or if you have never had layers trying some layers. I think a lot of celebrities are experimenting a lot with colours and hairstyles and I think that will definitely translate into mainstream.
You have a long list of Celebrity clients you look after, can you name a few for our readers please?
I don’t like to kiss and tell, if you go on my Instagram you can find a few! (Smiles)
Where do you like to get your inspiration when your not in the salon or on set?
I feel very lucky to live in Manhattan, I feel surrounded by inspiration, Whether I am at the Met museum, or an underground party in a Brooklyn warehouse, I am always looking for things that inspire me. I’m always doing research on different eras. It always fascinates me to see how many trends have happened in the past. Some amazing and some questionable.
If you were to only pick two product’s to take on holidays what would be your choice?
Sally Hershberger 24k Dry Oil, I have frizzy curly hair so I need something to tame my frizz and not weigh it down, This product is the most perfect lightweight oil out there, I have never seen anything else like it.
Unwash Bio-cleansing Conditioner: I don’t like to shampoo my hair frequently so this cleansing conditioner is my saving grace! It makes my hair feel clean without disrupting my curl pattern or leave residue, I’m obsessed!
We loved Gigi’s hair, the cut, the styling and movement in the hair was just fantastic, Any advice on how our readers can create it at home?
Thank you so much! I always have so much fun with her she’s so amazing and hysterical!
I always recommend my clients blow the hair with volume, using the right products and tools. If you want a wavy tousled look you can use a 1 1/4 inch iron and just wrap section around the iron, I always like to stretch it out as well so it’s not a tight spiral. But remember the cut has a lot to do with it as well, You need the right cut for the style, if you don’t have any layers or movement in your hair it will be more difficult to achieve this look.
Can you tell us your favourite place in New York when your not in the Salon?
I love to get lost in the city, l really wish I could name one place, but living in this city is lovely, there are so many great places. When I am not in the salon I like to go to different neighbourhoods and just walk around and explore.
