Going to the gym shouldn’t be a fashion show where we go to show off the way we look. However, it’s an undeniable fact that if we look and feel good, we perform better, so why not give yourself the extra boost, even if you are at the gym. Of course, it’s not that simple, and there are a few things that you should know in order to avoid looking like a hot mess. Here are the tried and tested tips for gym fashion.
Put comfort first
If your clothes are tight, the material stretchy and pants uncomfortable, you will not be able to focus on your workout as you will only be thinking about the uncomfortable clothes you are wearing. So, the first rule of dressing for the gym is: be comfortable. If you feel better working out in shorts and a sports bra, or in sweatpants and a baggy T-shirt – go for it. Avoid cotton since it retains water and you will end up walking around in a wet shirt, and also, cheap, synthetic materials, since they can irritate your skin. A rule of thumb: if you wouldn’t be comfortable sleeping in it on a summer’s night, don’t wear it at the gym.
Match the outfit to the type of the workout
There are a million types of exercises you can do in the gym, and not every outfit will be suitable for every workout. If you are cycling, make sure you are not wearing any long, flowy bottoms that can get caught up in the pedals. If you are going to a yoga class, make sure that you wear something that is lightweight and moisture-wicking, but also something that hugs your body so that the trainer can see what you’re doing and how you’re doing it, and be able to correct any mistakes. If you are not sure what you should wear – don’t be afraid to ask.
Forget about makeup
No matter how waterproof your mascara is or how lightweight your foundation seems to be, you will not feel comfortable when the sweat starts washing off your face. If you really can’t bear to part with your makeup, use a good base, and don’t do the usual full-face routine. Your skin needs to breathe and it needs to sweat. Everyone comes there to work out and break a sweat, so don’t be concerned with the fact that you are not looking your best without your makeup.
You don’t need special clothes
A big misconception people have is that working out requires expensive equipment and clothing. The truth is: sports clothes exist for a reason and they are made exactly for that purpose. Sports bras are made to keep everything in place during the most extreme workouts, and men’s gym shorts are made to be stretchy and adaptable to any exercise, while still allowing the body to breathe. But there is no need to blow all of your money on a ton of workout clothes since you can get one good set that will last you a long time, as long as you wash it in between every workout and take care of it according to the instructions.
Depending on the workout you are planning to do, you might want to bring a spare shirt with you, or simply keep one in your gym locker. Other essentials include a towel, water bottle and deodorant. Remember that you are there for yourself, and just like you are not going around judging other people for how they are dressed, nobody is judging you; so, just relax, be comfortable and go break a sweat.
